“Battle of the Beat Makers is the premiere producer competition in Canada, showcasing Canadian producers talents on a level no other producer competition has.”
- Kamoya Ash, Universal Music Canada

“The event was well organized. Usually something like a producer competition would get boring at one point, but the way Battle of the Beat Makers is put together kept the night dope.”
- Tommy Spitz, Canadian Recording Artist

“This is a huge way of getting out there and exposing yourself on a production side. This is how I first started out. The first thing I’ve done….music wise, was go to Battle of the Beat Makers” - Boi-1Da, 2X Grammy Award Winning Producer

“Battle of the Beat Makers is a staple inside of Canada’s hip-hop scene. It is a breeding ground for talented, young producers to showcase their abilities to the industry and compete for a crown. It captures the true essence of hip-hop culture and it’s a part of Canadian hip-hop history.”
- Priya Ramanujam, Editor-In-Chief of Urbanology Magazine

“Battle of the Beat Makers is the mecca of beat battles. It’s the main stage where producers face off for supremacy.” - DJ P-Plus, Stylus Award Winning DJ

“Battle of the Beat Makers has become one of the premiere events in Canada. As a distributor of software and hardware, I find that this is the only event currently catering to the producers of urban genres. As this part of the industry grows, BBM will be integral in helping to identify those who will be the hit makers of tomorrow.”
- Andrew Josephs, Project Manager, Music Marketing Inc.

“Battle of the Beat Makers is Canada’s preeminent producer competition. It has helped launch the careers of superstar producers and is a must attend for any producer or beat maker serious about their craft and networking.” - Soze, President, Mosaic Music

“Best show bringing out true talented people.” - Blake Carrington, Canadian Recording Artist

“Battle of the Beat Makers has created a platform for our producers to build their own portfolios. It’s a cesspool for anyone looking for the next best producer/composer… and the North Coast is up next!” - Joshua “Wizdome” Barclay, Universal Music Canada

The 8th Annual Battle of the Beat Makers (BBM) competition and Producer Retreat have prepare to open the floodgates for producers of all ages! Who will compete to be the crowned “Grand Champion” in 2012? As Canada’s pre-eminent producer event and Retreat, producers can look forward to an expansion of talent to entertain, enlighten and enrich. This year will feature another amazing weekend filled with information sharing, workshops, conferences, panels, networking engagements, product demonstrations, beat critiques, after parties and of course, the Main Event, “The Battle”.

As the only producer related event in Canada responsible for launching the careers of multi-platinum selling and Grammy-award winning producers, BBM is pleased to offer this unique opportunity to another batch of producers on the rise.

“The vision has always been to serve as a launching pad for Canadian producers to catapult their careers on the global stage. We are largely responsible for changing the status of producers in Canada, from being a hidden and largely slept on (Hip Hop) element to one where producers are now some of the most celebrated figures in urban music,” says Clifton Reddick, BBM Founder.

Closes: August 22nd, 2012 @ 11:59pm

Producers can register online at Battleofthebeatmakers.com or in-person at various retail outlets listed on our website.

The prize packs will consist of cash and prizes valued at over $10,000.

Battle of the Beat Makers (BBM) is Canada’s Official Producer Competition, which focuses on showcasing the talents of the hottest up-and-coming Canadian producers. BBM is the first outlet for Canadian producers to showcase their talents in a live setting.

Beatz-Meet-Rhymes kicked off the 2011 Battle of the Beat Makers weekend with a bang at Toronto’s Pacha Lounge. The event served as an industry mixer and highlighted the 32 producers who had made it into this year’s final competition. As the finalists stood next to each other against a promotional event backdrop for a photo op, the battle looked promising, and the prospective winner — a tossup amongst a diverse group of talent.

This year’s competition officially opened to producers of all ages, allowing 14-year-old Mississauga-native, Ebony Oshunrinde, an opportunity to compete. Making the list of finalists, Oshunrinde — who goes by producer name WondaGurl — proved that the young can do it too. It was through the Internet that she first watched videos on how to compose beats, as well as learned about the Battle of the Beat Makers. She even named herself after Boi-1da, past BBM champion and one of this year’s celebrity judges, originally wanting to call herself Gurl-1Da.

This year’s battle saw nearly 20 first-timers, like WondaGurl, make the final battle including Duke Dinero, The Radiant Child, Alpine, Pirate X and The Knowbody’s. Though some members of the creatively-named trio, made up of 19-year-olds Cristobal and Dylirious and 18-year-old Mad-Doe, had battled under different monikers in the past, as a group it was their first battle. What they most looked forward to was “winning and getting their names out there (in the industry),” on the eve of the battle.

But before they could even play one beat in the weekend’s main event, the producers were called one by one to the stage, in the first-ever Position Lottery to determine who each finalist would face in the first round.

Hosted by Bozack Morris and special guest performer/announcer Linda Luztono, the lottery made for some interesting match ups. Perhaps most notable was the barely teen WondaGurl, who had started making beats at the age of 10, versus Sentury Status who had been making beats for over a decade.

Recognized in countries worldwide, BBM is Toronto’s largest beat battle competition and has gained a huge following over the past few years. For Luztono, fresh off a win on BET’s “106 & Park” Wild Out Wednesday competition, it was her first time attending the event.

“This is one of the greatest ways to get noticed as a producer and network… it seems like the biggest thing in Toronto for producers,” said the singer, following the lottery.

On his way out, after sharing two exclusive beats with his hometown audience, Boi-1da shared that he was most looking forward to, “great production, loudness, good beats, good music and a little bit of soulfulness,” at this year’s battle.

With many events to come during the weekend this was just the beginning to a beat-packed event.
